DA mayor in Tshwane, Solly Msimanga, will investigate R4 billion in tenders initiated under the former ANC administrations.
Msimanga told EWN that his administration would probe all suspicious tenders that were put out under the ANC, starting with four tenders worth R4 billion – with more expected to follow.
The Tshwane mayor dropped a bomb on the former ANC administration early September by laying criminal charges against senior officials.
The charges relate to two forensic reports, detailing corruption, fraud, and misuse of more than R90 million of public money in two projects of the City’s previous leadership: City Hall and the Mayoral Residence.
The new probes relate to:
- A R3 billion smart meter tender;
- A R380 million Wi-Fi contract;
- A R300 million vehicle fleet contract; and
- A R200 million broadband contract.
According to EWN, if any problems are found in these tender processes, the Tshwane government will renegotiate or even cancel the contracts..
Msimanga announced last week that he would open all future tender processes to root out any potential corruption involved in deals with government.
Investigations by Carte Blanche and Noseweek revealed a patronage network of over 40,000 suppliers in Tshwane, in which small companies were acting as middle-men to supply the municipality with items at a substantial markup.
Items such as lightbulbs were being sold at triple the price. Products – often unneccessary products – were being bought at hiked prices in bulk at R30,000, to avoid having to be tendered out.
