Today, our team, alongside the ROC team and the director for the Climate Change Adaptation & Resilience Programme, engaged in bilateral discussions with CoJ’s Environment and Infrastructure Services Department (EISD) team.

Our agenda included addressing key challenges, presenting a rehabilitation plan endorsed by the World Bank, and discussing community empowerment initiatives aimed at mitigating pollution in Centurion Lake.

We look forward to continued collaboration and progress in tackling environmental issues in our community.

MMC’s and representatives from the City of Tshwane Metroplitan Municipality (COT), alongside counterparts from the City of Joburg (COJ), came together for a positive and productive meeting to discuss interventions for the betterment of this historical gem.

Lutske Newton, representing the COT Sustainability Unit, delivered a compelling presentation outlining the historical context. Her expertise shed light on the intricate challenges facing Centurion Lake and the urgent need for collaborative action.

To date over the past few years 194 000+ cubic metres of sand and silt have been removed from the Lake!

Bradley Riley, representing the World Bank Africa, brought invaluable insights to the table, emphasizing the importance of sustainable development and the role of strategic investments in environmental conservation. His presentation underscored the global significance of projects aimed at preserving #infrastructure like Centurion Lake.

Tarryn Johnston had the privilege to present the historical work of Hennops River Revival, challenges like illegal sand mining changing the River morphology, increasing erosion and that this “need” for Riversand is through development.

I shared upcoming projects planned by the #Hennops Revival and Deep Water Movement and how we could be assisting in various ways, from #skillsdevelopment, hashtag#greeninfrastructure, remediation and community #empowerment projects including #educational elements for the next generation of Leaders.

The room buzzed with enthusiasm as we collectively brainstormed strategies to address the pressing issues at hand, particularly focusing on the restoration of the #Kaalspruit and #Hennops River. Through fruitful discussions and shared expertise, a sense of optimism filled the air.

In the spirit of #unity and #progress, both municipalities, along with the World Bank and Hennops Revival/Deep Water Movement, unanimously agreed that #collaboration is the key to success. It was heartening to witness a shared commitment to prioritize environmental conservation and community well-being.

As we move forward, rest assured that concerted efforts will be made to enhance the state of the Kaalspruit and Hennops River, ensuring that future generations can enjoy time in nature in safety and beauty with the feeling of tranquility along the banks of Centurion Lake.

Included are some amazing old photos of what the lake was like in it’s prime and I place emphasis on the need for Private Sector support!
